2025 Winners

Canadian Progress Club Halifax Citadel is pleased to announce that our 2025 Bursary Program ($2,500.00) recipient is Will Brown.

Will has dedicated his time to various volunteer activities that have positively impacted his community. He has led, mentored, and supported others through programs like “Best Buddies”, “Hockey Guys Group”, and coaching roles.

Will has been an active and engaged member of his school community. He has balanced academics, athletics, and volunteerism with great poise. His academic record speaks for itself, earning High Honours in each of his years at Citadel High. Will has shown himself to be a thoughtful and inclusive leader. His involvement in “Best Buddies”, a program that supports students with intellectual disabilities, taught him the value of inclusion and how much we can learn from those who might be different from us.  He was also part of “Hockey Guys Group”, a peer-led initiative aimed at supporting mental health and fostering inclusion within the hockey community.  Through one of the discussions, Will realized that many LGBTQ+ individuals might not feel comfortable being open about their identities, and this led to the creation of the first NS High School Hockey Pride game. He also coaches the St Agnes Junior High Flag Football team, as well as the U18 Flag Football team. Will credits coaching for teaching him the importance of leadership, patience, and teamwork.

Will is also a tireless volunteer, with over 300 hours in community service in the last year. His efforts with programs such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and various school-led initiatives like the Toy Drive, Terry Fox Marathon of Hope, and Stockings for Seniors reflect a deep commitment to community service. His leadership roles —from captaincy in football and flag football to coaching younger athletes — show that others trust and look up to him. These experiences have deepened his understanding of inclusion and empathy, and have shown him the importance of helping others.

Will will be attending St. Francis Xavier University in September, intending to complete a Bachelor of Business Administration Major Program, and hopes to become an Accountant.

On behalf of the CPC Halifax Citadel, Congratulations, Will!

Canadian Progress Club Halifax Citadel is pleased to announce that our 2025 Bursary Program ($1,000.00) recipient is Dylan Claridge.

Dylan credits the support of his mother for teaching him about resilience, hard work, and the importance of education. Despite facing personal learning challenges, which made it difficult for him to concentrate for long periods, stay organized, and complete tasks on time, he was determined not to let his disability define him or prevent him from succeeding. Dylan sought out management strategies, like using detailed schedules, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and seeking support from teachers. These methods allowed him to stay on top of his studies and perform well in school.  He was actively involved in extracurricular activities, such as being a member of the J.L. Ilsley Football team.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dylan gives back to his community, particularly through his work with seniors.  For the past three years, he has been a dedicated volunteer with Chebucto Links, a local nonprofit organization that supports seniors in the community. Every week, he dedicates time to deliver groceries to seniors, which not only provides support to them but also helps them to live independently. This experience has not only taught him valuable life lessons about empathy, compassion, and the importance of community service, but it has also reinforced his belief in the importance of giving back and making a positive impact in the lives of others. In April 2024, Dylan was one of the recipients of the HRM Volunteering award.

Being a good person is something that his mother has always taught him to value. He firmly believes that success isn’t just about achieving personal goals—it’s about using those achievements to help others. Whether it’s through his academic endeavours or his volunteer work, Dylan strives to live by these values every day.

Balancing volunteer work, academic responsibilities, part-time employment, and athletic involvement on the JL Ilsley football team speaks volumes about Dylan’s time management skills, perseverance, and character.

Dylan will be attending Nova Scotia Community College in the fall to pursue a career in Welding.

On behalf of the CPC Halifax Citadel, Congratulations, Dylan!
